Adult Acne: Why It's Different

By Jessica Farhat, MSN, NP-C · NECTAR body•face•skin, DeWitt MI

Acne is more than skin-deep.

It affects how you feel when you look in the mirror, whether you volunteer for the photo, and how confidently you show up in your everyday life. Yet adult acne is rarely talked about openly. There's often an assumption that breakouts are something you're supposed to leave behind after your teenage years.

When most people think of acne, they picture a teenager navigating high school. But one of the most common skin concerns we treat at NECTAR isn't teenage acne at all. It's adult acne.

We see women and men in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond struggling with breakouts they never expected to have. Some have battled acne for years. Others find themselves experiencing it for the first time during perimenopause, after pregnancy, or following other hormonal shifts. Many arrive feeling frustrated after trying countless products, prescriptions, supplements, elimination diets, and social media recommendations with little success.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Adult Acne Behaves Differently

The good news is that adult acne is treatable. The challenge is understanding that adult acne is not simply teenage acne showing up later in life. It behaves differently, develops for different reasons, and often requires a more comprehensive approach.

Unlike adolescent acne, which is primarily driven by excess oil production and clogged pores, adult acne is often influenced by multiple factors happening beneath the surface. Breakouts commonly appear along the jawline, chin, neck, and lower cheeks. These are the areas most associated with hormonal fluctuations. They also tend to be deeper, more inflamed, and often more painful than the blemishes many people remember from their teenage years.

Hormonal changes, chronic stress, elevated cortisol levels, inflammation, certain medications, birth control transitions, perimenopause, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to recurring breakouts. To make matters even more frustrating, adult skin is more prone to lingering redness, brown spots, and post-inflammatory pigmentation that can remain long after the breakout itself has healed.

"This is often why acne feels like a cycle that never ends."

Why Clearing Skin Isn't the Whole Answer

One of the biggest misconceptions about acne is that clearing a breakout means solving the problem. In reality, successful acne treatment involves more than reducing what's visible on the surface. It requires understanding why the breakouts are happening in the first place and creating a plan that supports long-term skin health.

At NECTAR, our goal isn't simply to help you get clear skin temporarily. We want to help you maintain healthier skin over time through personalized treatment plans that address both active acne and the factors contributing to it.

A Comprehensive, NP-Led Approach

Because there is no single "magic treatment" for acne, we take a comprehensive dermatology Nurse Practitioner-led and esthetician team approach that combines advanced technology, professional treatments, medical-grade skincare, and individualized guidance.

For Active Inflammatory Acne

BBL Forever Clear™

Using Sciton® BroadBand Light technology, BBL Forever Clear™ is one of our favorite treatment options for active inflammatory acne. It helps target acne-causing bacteria, calm inflammation, and support the skin's natural healing process. For many guests, a series of treatments can dramatically reduce both the frequency and severity of breakouts.

For Active Breakouts + Discoloration

Customized Chemical Peels

Another powerful tool in the treatment of acne. By encouraging healthy cell turnover, reducing congestion, and improving pore function, peels help address both active breakouts and the discoloration that often lingers behind. For many guests, they become an important part of both correction and maintenance.

For Texture + Acne Scarring

SkinPen® Microneedling

Once active acne is under control, SkinPen® microneedling can help improve the textural changes acne often leaves behind. By stimulating collagen production, microneedling helps soften acne scars, refine skin texture, and restore smoother, healthier-looking skin.

The Work That Happens Outside the Treatment Room

Of course, some of the most important work happens outside of the treatment room.

One of the first things we do during an acne consultation is listen. We want to understand your skin history, when your breakouts occur, how hormones may be affecting your skin, what products you're using, what treatments you've tried in the past, and how factors like stress, sleep, and lifestyle may be contributing to inflammation.

Because acne is rarely caused by just one thing. It's incredibly layered with multiple variables to consider.

The more complete the picture, the more effective and realistic your treatment plan becomes.

You Don't Have to Navigate This Alone

If you've been quietly struggling, consider this your sign to stop trying to navigate it alone.

Schedule a consultation and we'll take the time to understand your skin, identify what's driving your breakouts, and create a personalized treatment plan designed around your goals, lifestyle, and long-term skin health.

No judgment. No one-size-fits-all solutions. Just expert guidance, advanced treatments, and a clear path toward healthier, more confident skin.
